The Lord's Day

August 31, 2014

Four baptisms and the Lord's Supper... what better way to spend the day in worship and service.  Both these simple yet profound ordiances of the church are doctrinally sound and necessary for growth within the church.  Adding to the numbers and remembering what Christ has done on the cross... thats what its all about.

Throughout scripture, parallels are made.  Everything points to God's immeasurable love for His people, His ultimate plan for their return, and His picture-perfect cross that bridges the gap between sin and holiness.  From the very conception of Christ, John the Baptist was preparing the way for Jesus.  After their birth, John would continue to lay the groundwork for what is to be the Son of God.  John gets the blessing to baptize Jesus.

Jesus was baptized. Yep... that's right. Why? Not because of he had sin.  Simply to set an example for His followers.  He would set forth in actions and words the new church.  As the story continues, Jesus calls his disciples to follow him.

At the Lord's Supper, Jesus speaks to His followers and foretells of the betrayal leading to the cross.  Even though he knows at this time who will turn on him, Jesus still love him and eats with him.  Why? Because it was part of the perfect plan to redeem a lost world.  Through redemption, we get to experience full restoration with God.  His plan is fulfilled.

What now?  We must follow.  We must love like he loved.  Give like he gave.  Serve like he served.  We must be disciples that truly follow him.  Will you take up your cross today?
